Sew Not Boring Christmas Gift Guide

Whether you are desperately hunting for the perfect sewing gift (because you have no idea what to buy) or looking for a sewing gift for youself 😉 (I see you), I’ve got the perfect curated sewing gift list for ya.

You’ll find a range of gifts, from small to big, that are sure to impress any sewing lover. Some gifts are practical, others are thoughtful, and some are absolute dream gifts.

P.S. If you’re a sewist, don’t hesitate to send this to your family so they know what to get you.

*Some of the links below are affiliate links. I earn a tiny commission on these purchases, which helps me continue creating sewing patterns and keep doing what I love. I appreciate your support!*

Oh and btw all of these ideas are my own and nobody asked me to write this post. These are just gifts that I think people will genuinely love.

Low Price BUT Big Return on Happiness

This nifty little tool marks the fabric with a line crease instead of needing a marker or chalk (which sometimes are hard to remove). Plus it’s super durable and won’t need to be replaced in any foreseeable future.

If you’ve never seen one of these in action give this YouTube video a quick look.

If you’re not a sewist, you may think overlocker cones sound kinda like a lame gift, but having a nearly endless supply of thread for overlocking is so nice! I prefer to have a small stockpile of sewing supplies that I use regularly, including overlocking cones. You could equate this to stacking logs for a fire; it’s great to know you have extras without needing to venture out and find more (even if you just order everything online).

This is an extremely practical gift. Just ensure the person you’re buying for has an overlocker (different from a regular sewing machine). Otherwise, these cones won’t be that helpful to them.

Similar to the last gift, a collection of sewing machine needles is always a welcomed gift. The humble needle is the backbone of every single sewing project, but we don’t always remember to buy them.

When I head to the fabric store, I’m often so distracted by my new fabric that I forget to scoop up more needles. A stocking full of sewing machine needles would make me smile.

Can you believe I’ve never added a sewing label to any of my sewing projects?! I think these are so cute, but I never buy them for myself. But if someone happened to slip one of these into my stocking, I wouldn’t complain (tbh I’d love it).

Sewing labels fall into the cute but not necessary category of sewing. But that means they’re a great gift because there’s a good chance the sewists in your life would appreciate them.

I personally love the sweary labels from KATM. If you know a potty mouth sewist, these might be just the thing.

Now that it gets dark at like 4 PM, a good light is becoming super necessary in my sewing room. I bet the sewing lover in your life squeezes in as much sewing as possible, including some late-night sewing sessions. This means they’ll need good lighting to see their stitches while they sew or when they seam rip them 😳.

Gifts for Your Sewing Bestie

It can be a little tricky to buy a sewing pattern for someone since they are often clothing-focused.  My solution is to buy an accessory pattern instead of a clothing one. A bag sewing pattern is easy to adapt to each person’s unique style through the fabric choice, and you won’t need to worry about the sizing like you would with a clothing item.

The Bestie Bag (left) by Blackbird Fabrics is extremely popular in the sewing community. It’s an uber-practical bag for toting around goodies and necessities. Faye Studio’s Slouchy Bag pattern (right) caught my eye on Instagram because it looks like an elevated everyday tote bag. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for anything with bows. Either way, it’s a cutie bag pattern that I’m sure many will love.

If you know your sewing gift recipient wants to level up their skills and start designing their own patterns, a patternmaking book would be amazing!

While sewing designs from someone else is always fun, there is a special feeling when you sew and wear something you crafted from your own idea. A book like this one will help get the design ideas flowing and give perspective on how to break down a design idea into smaller pattern components. It’s basically like a human-shaped puzzle.

When I received this book, I spent the entire afternoon studying all the pages and getting majorly inspired by the possibilities. Highly recommend this as a gift for a budding fashion designer.

What I’ve learned slowly over time, because I’m a bit stubborn, is that the right tool makes a huge difference to the final outcome of a project. While it’s extremely tempting to buy the cheaper version of something like fabric shears, often that tool will disappoint you sooner rather than later. I have a collection of LDH scissors and tools and they are amazing! I wanna be fully transparent and let you know that LDH sent me their tools, but they didn’t ask me to share anything about them. I’ve been using their stuff for more than a year and it’s better than everything I’ve tried before.

For when you know they love fabric but you wouldn’t risk buying the wrong one or the wrong amount. So while I often think gift cards are a bit of a half-a**ed (🍑) present, but a gift card to your sewing enthusiast’s fav store is actually amazing! And if you don’t know their favorite fabric shop, here is a list of some uber-popular fabric stores.

Blackbird Fabrics – Canada

Fluid+Drape – US | Joann – US

Fabric Godmother -UK | Merchant & Mills – UK

 The Fabric Store – NZ

You might think that having a sewing kit takes away half the fun of sewing, which is picking the fabric and all the other little bits and bobs needed for a project. But it’s nice to sew on autopilot. This is especially nice for sewing projects that have lots of little pieces or tricky-to-find notions. I just purchased my first bra sewing kit from Small Bobbins because I’ve struggled so hard to find bra-making materials in my local fabric shops (and even online). So when all the pieces come in one cute little box, that’s a sweet little sewing treat.

Cinnamon Studio Berkley Bow Kit – UK

Atelier Brunette Banane Kit – EU

Ok, so I’m a little biased because this is my embroidered sewing hat, but I wear it so much and love a good pun. As a passionate sewist and ice latte aficionado, espressew felt like the perfect combo of my 2 favorite things.

So if you also have a caffeinated sewing lover in your life, you could consider getting one of these for them.

It also comes in lots of different colors!

Ridiculously Amazing Sewing Gifts (You Win Gifting if You Get One of These)

This is a dream gift to the level where you probably don’t need to buy another gift for the next 3 years. After someone’s been sewing for a handful of years, it’s normal to want to begin pattern drafting or draping (or both). While there are dress forms that you can buy in the couple hundred dollar range, they are usually made of hard plastic covered by felt, and the adjustment knobs break down after a couple of years.

Some of the main reasons I would nudge you to go with a Royal Dress Form is its functionality and quality. The Monica form is fully pinable (no hard plastic under the outer layer). This might not seem that important, but when draping, this is an extremely important detail for workflow. The mannequin has two legs, not just a flat bottom, so that you can drape pants,

swimsuits, and underwear. The balance lines on the form also help to make draping easy so you know where the waist, hip, and other major body lines are.

I recommend taking a close look at the size chart. Try to find the one closest to your gift receiver’s measurements (you might need to let them in on the secret about the gift so you can get this part right). If none of the mannequins are just right, pick the slightly smaller one and use the padding system to increase the size when you receive it. You can always add circumference, but you cannot take it away.

I’ve been able to create patterns so much faster (and less mockups) with my mannequin and I’m not really sure I could go back to a time when I didn’t have it.

Royal Dress Form is having a sale until December 25th, you can find out more here.

A big desk with many drawers is ideal for housing sewing tools and supporting a couple of machines simultaneously. I have the Norden desk from Ikea. It has 6 slide-out drawers that are super deep. I keep all of the cutting tools, needles, interfacing, elastic, bobbins, and more in the drawers. The drawers make up the middle panel of the table, and there are two wings that can be raised up or folded down depending on your needs. The size of the table is pretty great for a sewing workspace (cutting and literally sewing). I can house my sewing machine and overlocker on the opposite table wings and still have space to work.

If you can’t find that option in your Ikea, here’s an Amazon option that is similar in the sense of having lots of nooks for organizing sewing materials.

I bet your sewing person has not taken a unique course like this before because neither have I 😂. I would love to do this, but it’s definitely a hefty chunk of money. If you are an extremely generous gift giver, then this would be the creme de la creme of gifts. This course is about DIY shoe making (at home). You may be thinking, what does shoe making have to do with sewing, but there is some major overlap. There’s patternmaking, fitting, sewing, and fabric manipulation. These are all sewing skills but used in an entirely new way.

Another course that I’ve seen is a bra-making camp with What Bella Made, and it is around $625. It’s an in-person course, so you’ll need to see if she is coming to your area.

I don’t have the actual scientific data to back this claim up but I assume about 8.5 out of every 10 sewist has back pain. We are always contorting and crawling on the floor to cut fabric or hunching our backs while sewing at our machine for hours on end.

I think if you ask any sewing person they’ll say they definitely need a massage. So something like this back massager would be the perfect gift.

I hope you found the PERFECT gift for the sewist in your life or for yourself!
